چکیده

It is well known that in open-ended evolution, the nature of the environment plays in key role in directing evolution. However, in Evolutionary Robotics, it is often unclear exactly how parameterisation of a given environment might influence the emergence of particular behaviours. We consider environments in which the total amount of energy is parameterised by availability and value, and use surface plots to explore the relationship between those environment parameters and emergent behaviour using a variant of a well-known distributed evolutionary algorithm (mEDEA). Analysis of the resulting landscape show that it is crucial for a researcher to select appropriate parameterisations in order that the environment provides the right balance between facilitating survival and exerting sufficient pressure for new behaviours to emerge. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time such an analysis has been undertaken.

Adaptive Rule-Base Influence Function Mechanism for Cultural Algorithm

This study proposes a modified version of cultural algorithms (CAs) which benefits from rule-based system for influence function. This rule-based system selects and applies the suitable knowledge source according to the distribution of the solutions. This is important to use appropriate influence function to apply to a specific individual, regarding to its role in the search process. This rule ...

Exploring the Concept of Open-Ended Evolution

Extended Abstract The term open-ended evolution (“OEE”) is used by the ALife community to refer to the kind of long-term evolutionary dynamics observed in the biosphere. It is generally taken to refer to evolutionary systems which display a continual production of adaptively significant innovations. Furthermore, some authors use the term to imply a sustained increase in complexity and/or divers...

Identifying Necessary Components for Open-Ended Evolution

A central goal of the field of artificial life is to build evolving systems that capture interesting dynamics of natural systems, producing evolutionary outcomes such as sophisticated navigation behaviors, novel cooperative strategies, complex ecosystems, or major evolutionary transitions, to name but a few. Such “open-ended” systems are sought after for a number of reasons: 1) For artificial l...

An Approach to Reducing Overfitting in FCM with Evolutionary Optimization

Fuzzy clustering methods are conveniently employed in constructing a fuzzy model of a system, but they need to tune some parameters. In this research, FCM is chosen for fuzzy clustering. Parameters such as the number of clusters and the value of fuzzifier significantly influence the extent of generalization of the fuzzy model. These two parameters require tuning to reduce the overfitting in the...

A Qualitative Investigation Into Conceptual Understanding at Iranian Elementary Schools

This study attempts to root out some of the causes of absence of conceptual understanding in elementary level particularly in math subject and the factors that cause this deficiency. As a body of researchers, we use a quasi-form of methodology qualitatively designed by which we give a pre-test and post-test to our participants (randomly selected teachers and students), through some open-ended q...
